You might check your firewall settings on the 192.168.2.1 computer. Perhaps
it is blocking the ping requests. There are other things to check as well,
but this would be a start. Compare the network settings between the two
computers to see any differences (other than the IP address). Just in case,
try changing the IP address in the last digit to something like 3 instead of
1 to see if that changes the way it behaves.

Thanks for this reply and I apologize for the delay in answering. There was
a family emergency here and I have been away for awhile.
I configured the network as you recommended below, i.e., one computer has an
IP address of 192.168.2.1 and the other has 192.168.2.2. I can "ping"
192.168.2.2 from 192.168.2.1 and get the following reply and get a round
trip time of average = 815ms. I CANNOT "ping" 192.168.2.1 from
192.168.2.2 -- the "ping" request just times out.
