Tom, here is what the v7 manual says about tone scan, called "Automatic
tone id" in the manual. To summarize, it sounds like the current tone is
replaced with the found tone, but the scan will continue until you stop the
scan by pressing any key. From the manual, page 49:
...
Automatic Tone Frequency ID
This function automatically identifies the incoming tone frequency on a
received signal.
1 Hold tone for 1 second to activate the function- A tone frequency display
replaces the frequency display and the 1 hz decimal begins blinking. When
a signal is received, the transceiver begins scanning through all tone
frequencies in order to identify the incoming tone frequency. When the
frequency is identified, a beep sounds, and the identified frequency
appears
and blinks. The identified frequency is programmed in place of the
currently set CTCSS frequency.
2 Press any key to cancel the function.

Sounds good, Steve.
For some reason, I thought I heard somewhere that the tone only stays there
for a few seconds, at which time you'd have to do something or you'd loose
it.
I'm going to give it a try here on one of our local repeaters on both the
TMV7A and THF6A just to familiarize myself with it before our big trip in
early June.
Thanks, and 73 from Tom Behler: KB8TYJ
