You are right that capability would be wonderful.  I wonder if you could
add this if any of the wires in the cable are unused or otherwise
available?    Has anyone looked at the schematic to see how the PF
function is done?

Brett,

"PF" stands for "programmable function."  Many of the Kenwood hand mics
have PF keys which can be used to control functions such as the speech,
or the Enter key, etc.  They're usually controlled by items somewhere in
the menu, and are radio-specific.
