Now that you already know what it does, here's what it is:
Actually, I think the MP stands for Motion Picture as in the Motion Picture 
Industry; and the 3 is the revision number.  I've seen MP4 files out there. 
So, seems to me, mp3 is one of the many formats of audio files.  I've never 
examined an mp3 file to see how it's built.
