London - Miriam Makeba, also known as Mama Afrika, will be the top act at
the first Africa Day celebrations to be held at Trafalgar Square here this
month.
And Lucas Radebe and Mark Fish are likely to form part of an Africa XI
football team to be launched at the same time.
London Mayor Ken Livingstone has announced that Africa Day will be
celebrated on May 28, a UK public holiday, with a free concert that will be
attended by about 35 000 people. Makeba will be supported by the African
Jazz Allstars.
*Africans make up five percent of London's population*In addition to live
music, the sights, tastes and sounds of Africa will be brought to London
with a food court, craft stalls and processions led by the likes of Durban
group the Lions of Zululand.
"The mayor of London recognises the significance and symbolic importance of
Mama Afrika performing at the first ever Africa Day celebrations on
Trafalgar Square," the mayor of London's office said. "As the empress of
African song, Makeba is credited with bringing the rhythmic and spiritual
sounds of Africa to the West."
Africans make up five percent of London's population and it is hoped that
this will become an annual event, giving them the chance to celebrate and
share their culture, the mayor's office said.
During the week preceding Africa Day, an Africa XI football team, comprising
retired stars of African football, such as Radebe and Fish, will be
launched. The Africa XI will take on a team of former England greats in
Nigeria at the beginning of next month.
It is envisaged that these players will be involved in a series of
initiatives leading up to the 2010 World Cup aimed at developing the game on
the continent.
Other events to be held in conjunction with Africa Day include the launch of
Voice of Africa Radio, the first African-led radio station to be given a
London-wide FM licence. - Independent Foreign Service
