Does the same thing happen if you use the same device on a USB port on the
back of the computer?

If not, are the USB wires from the front port(s), (where it/they connect to the
mother board), a single plug (or two), or lots of little single ones. (Up to nine).

If you have all the "little ones", you will need the specs for IDing the wires and
where they properly go on the MB...
