You can never have too much backup!
The paper version, good idea. The many CDs ... good idea.
DVDs are now cheaper per unit ... also, one DVD equals about 6 CDs
so you get more photos per DVD.
Keep them off-site (example: friend's|relative's house, bank safety deposit, your desk at work)
so if your house burns down you have backup.
For in-house, you can get something like http://www.wdc.com/en/library/usb/2178-701073.pdf
Western Digital external dual drive ... the two terabyte version can be configured as a
one terabyte RAID 1 system because it has two hard drives. The one terabyte version
can be configured as a half terabyte raid system. They have ethernet GB/100/10 interface.

Around US$700 for the 2TB version. I'd go with the RAID 1 mirroring configuration.
