Twybil,  I think the color you are referring to is called "Navajho White"
on most color charts, but your description fits it perfectly.  Ruth

Py, It used to face east, as did the priest when performing the service.
The unwashed were on the other side of the rood screen picking their
noses. There was an ecumenical dogfight in the fifties, when the altar got
turned around to nbe more "client friendly". That's when all the church
interiors got painted mayonaisse beige, too.
