Thursday, October 27, 2005.  Ruth Ojiambo Ochieng, a human rights
leader, peace activist and director of Isis-Womens International
Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE), is the 2005 J. Jobe Soffa and
Marguerite Jacqmin Soffa Distinguished International Visitor.  Ms.
Ochieng will deliver the annual
Soffa Lecture, at 4:00 p.m. at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon Street,
Madison, Wisconsin. Ms. Ochieng will speak on "Women as Peacemakers

Department of English, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
invites applications for a position in African literature.
Preference will be given to comparatists with strong training in
Anglophone African studies and substantial expertise in sub-Saharan

  CALL FOR PAPERS/PROPOSALS

The Language Institute invites proposals for interdisciplinary
interest circles on topics relate to the study of language,
literature or culture.  The goal of this program is to provide a
forum for exploring new ideas and sharing perspectives and
approached, and to foster collaboration among faculty and students
from the many departments and programs on campus that conducts
research or provides instruction in world languages, literatures, and
cultures.  The interest circles must be based on a topic that crosses
traditional academic disciplines and/or departments and involves 5-6
faculty from at least three departments.  A UW-Madison faculty member
must submit the proposal.  The proposal consists of a brief narrative
(3-4 pages) that describes the topic and argues for its importance.
It should address how the circle might lead to other projects.  The
proposal much be submitted to Language Institute Director Sally
Magnan in 1322 Van Hise Hall no later than October 15.  An award for
$2500 will be given.



December 7, 2005. 2nd Annual Global Health Symposium: Global Health
and the Millennium Development Goals will be held at 5:00-8:00pm in
HSLC 1325. The symposium will describe the global health efforts of
UW faculty, staff, students and health professionals from the greater
Madison area in order to raise awareness about the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) and to allow participants to share
information about ongoing UW and Wisconsin-based global health
activities.  Keynote Speaker Dr. Frances R. Westley, Director of the
Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, will share her
perspectives on the critical role of health in the multi-sectoral MDG
effort.  Expert discussants will then be invited to comment.  After
the keynote lecture, the group will break into concurrent sessions in
which participants will share their experiences from around the world
in 10-minute presentations.  Submission requirements for presenters:

February 24-25, 2006.  Women, Gender, and Sport in Africa Symposium.
Ohio University, Athens, OH.  The focus will be on women, gender, and
sports.  Among the sub-themes that will be considered are: female
athletes in Muslim societies, womens national teams, traditional
female sports, masculinity, sport and gender and identity formation,
sports as a microcosm of gender inequity, and sports as a tool of
female self-empowerment. Although conference organizers encourage the
submission of papers that focus on sports and gender, they are also
open to the submission of papers that deal with other aspects of
sports in Africa. The deadline for presentation abstract submissions
and for roundtable abstract submissions is December 1, 2005. Proposal
for poster sessions should include a title and one paragraph
abstract. Posters may be on any topic addressing the conference theme

Scholarships for Study Abroad.  The National Security Education
Program (NSEP) offers scholarships to undergraduate students for
year, semester, and summer programs to study in less commonly studied
regions of the world: Africa, Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe, and
Latin America.  All recipients of the NSEP scholarship incur a
service obligation to the Federal Government in an area related to
national security (this covers a very broad range of agencies and
offices). The campus deadline for application is December 2, 2005.
