It sounds like there was a tear in the lining of the eye socket.  If so,
that happened to Sandy when we first moved to Denver.  The infection got so
severe, the doctor pulled me aside into the hallway of the hospital and said
they were trying every antibiotic they could find but the infection wasn't
stopping and that she could die it was so severe.  She was in the hospital
for a week.  They later did the repair just as you described and she said
the pain was out of this world.
