Dear Listmates:
You guys are incredible. I had 17 responses re: gluten ataxia and neurological
problems. Your responses were heartfelt and extremely helpful. My deep
thanks to all of you who took the time to write to me. Here’s the summary of
your responses:
3 of you said: “Try the diet anyway. What can it hurt?”
Several of you recommended articles by neurologist Dr. Marios Hadjivassiliou
and his research, especially
http://jnnp.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/72/5/560 “Gluten Sensitivity as a
Neurological Illness.” He contends that gluten can directly attack the nervous
system without causing damage to the small intestine. In other words, one
can have neurological problems related to gluten without having celiac
disease.
2 of you recommended an article by Dr. Peter Green, A. Alaedini, H. Sandler,
et al: “Mechanisms underlying celiac disease and its neurological
manifestations,” published in 2004 and another article also by Dr. Peter
Green, “The many faces of celiac disease: Clinical presentation of celiac
disease in the adult population.” Green’s book “Celiac Disease: A Hidden
Epidemic,” was also cited.
7 of you shared poignant personal stories of experiences with gluten ataxia
and neurological problems, including dizziness, extremity tremor, imbalance,
foggy thinking, unusual head sensations, visual difficulties, neuropathy-like
symptoms including tingling and numbness, Parkinson-s-like symptoms, MS-like
symptoms, stroke-like symptoms, and more. I am so grateful for these first-
hand accounts. ALL of you said you had significant relief on a GF diet, but
none has been “cured” completely.
1 person cited two NIH gluten-ataxia studies for which patients are being
recruited. “Gluten-Free Diet in Patients with Gluten Sensitivity and Cerebellar
Ataxia. http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00006492
http://clinicalstudies.info.nih.gov/detail/A_2001-N-0003.html
1 person cited fungi and mycotoxins as the sources for many neurological and
other diseases, included cancers and suggested www.knowthecause.com
website.
1 person also recommended Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and fish oil.
