Hi! I thought I sent this to the whole group yesterday, but I don't think
it made it. If it was already posted, I sincerely apologize.

Subject: Re: [VICUG-L] Buying vs building a computer:
Hello, all. I'm wanting to build my own computer as opposed to buying one
because I went to Dell, and to buy a system from them that is comparable to
what I'm wanting came out to be over $5,000. By picking the parts myself,
even when factoring in the cost of having it put together, I can probably
get the job done for less than $4000. Also, I have a Dell system at work,
and there have ben days when it's been even less reliable than my system
here at home. Finally, with a Dell, Gateway or whatever, it's going to come
with tons of software that I'll have absolutely no use for, not to mention
a 20 inch or bigger monitor. Further more, judging from what I've read,
it's pretty tough to add anything to a prebuilt system should one feel the
need to do so.
This 5-year-old system that I'm preparing to retire was built
piece-by-piece, and for the most part, it's worked like a dream. The only
difference this time is that I'm actually going to know what parts I'm
using; I have no clue what mb, processor, etc. are in my current system,
which makes trouble-shooting tough. My thinking that if I know exactly what
parts I have, it will be easier to trouble-shoot should problems arrise.
I know that I could probably do this whole project for less than $2000, but
my hope is to make my system as future-proof as reasonably possible. As for
Vista, I'd rather wait a few years until I'm convinced that it's going to
be stable; xp is working well for me, I just want it to go faster and be
more responsive, which is why I was asking for advice reguarding
motherboards and video cards.
I hope this answers some of your questions, and that everyone is having a
great day!
