Like Nortons, (and like some malware!) these programs are self-replicating 
so that removing their startup entries will only cause them to create new 
ones. Nor will registry cleaners do any good for much the same reason.

They are practically impossible to remove without the proper removal tools. 
I should imagine that McAfee, like Nortons, would have these available on 
its website. You need the removal tool appropriate to your particular version.

In one sense it's a good thing, because the intention is that such a system 
prevents any malware from disabling it.  That's fine as long as you intend 
to stick to Nortons or McAfee forever. But if, like Dean, you want to get 
rid of them, it's practically impossible without a dedicated tool. Trying 
to do so will only leave your computer in tatters.
