The best thing I did was to take some time to read the archives of the 
various lists to which I belong.  It took a bit of time, but It really 
filled in the blanks quickly and showed me where the controversies lay 
and where consensus prevailed.  Nearly every question one might ask has 
been asked and answered in the archives - brings one up-to-date very 
quickly.  Also, I keep all posts in my e-mail folders so anytime I need 
to refresh my memory I can do a keyword search locally.
