*** Rabies is almost invariably fatal once symptoms occur, but not everyone 
who is bitten by a rabid animal succumbs to the disease. Infection almost 
always occurs from bite wounds--the virus travels to the brain via the 
nervous system. Eating an infected bat would be unlikely to infect the 
eater.  Also, only a small percentage of bats are infected.
