We don't.
People (experts)see an excess of micro-organisms, and think that that is  
the cause of the problem, never realizing that before there can be an  
excess there must be the right conditions for them to breed. The right  
conditions are caused by modern environment, including all the nasty  
things we eat and drink. Pollution.

I like the idea that bacteria are really our janitors.
