There is a nice article on the Bencher / Butternut site about using a single
ground rod in place of a radial system. The bottom line is that you may
get a nice swr and make some contacts and be real happy, but most of your
power will be warming the ground at the base of the antenna. Not much DX
down there, except China maybe.
Assuming you are on 10 meters and the top tube of the antenna is set
correctly, cut 2 pieces of wire 8 1/2 feet long and attach them to the
ground connection at the antenna base and either lay them on the ground or
pull them away from the antenna and tie them off to something. Somebody
may actually hear you.
The Butternut needs a ground system to operate.
Good luck, Steve KW3A
