Hi.
The fact that Window-Eyes has no scripting language is one of the reasons
why they haven't eclipsed Freedom Scientific, because I certainly like what
they've done with Microsoft Office much better that I like the JAWS works
with it. However, you fall into the same fallacy that Howard does--you
think your situation is representative of everyone elses. The truth is
that JAWS can be customized without scripting if you want to use
frames. In some respects I don't like them as well as hyperactive windows
in Window-Eyes, but in other respects they can be more powerful. If you
really want to run down a product, make sure that you understand exactly
what the strengths and weaknesses of the product are, because I can tell
you that each of these products have strengths and weaknesses.
My one regret in all of this is that apparently some of you have had bad
experiences with agencies that are supposed to recommend/obtain a suitable
adaptive solution. Apparently from what I am reading here, there are some
areas of the country that either don't have the latitude to choose from an
array of products or are too lazy to take the time to figure out what it is
that their consumers need and recommend appropriately. In New York, I have
that latitude, and a number of things go into a recommendation. First, I
look at the environment they are going into and weigh the strengths and
weaknesses of the products involved, taking into account any technical
conflicts that could be a problem. Second, I look at what the person
receiving the software already knows and is comfortable with. If someone
is comfortable with Window-Eyes, I'm not going to switch them to JAWS
unless there is a compelling reason to do so. Finally, I talk to the
people I work with to get their feedback on what they like or dislike. If
other agencies/states aren't doing this, I'm sorry, but that really isn't a
sufficient reason to bash the products involved.
JAWS is superior for some purposes as I pointed out in my previous post,
while Window-Eyes shines in other areas, and HAL is good in still other areas.
I hope that the one thing you realize from all this if you haven't totally
closed your mind to input from others is that there isn't a such thing as a
"one size fits all" adaptive program. I'm sorry if agencies in your area
have treated it that way because they've sold you short if they did.
