Yep, I guess part of my thinking too is that TMV7A's may become harder and
harder to find, so I am glad my XYL decided to go for it.

She is really starting to think like a ham now;  kinda scary, isn't it?

As for those Icoms, I have heard others with the same problem as you
describe, and it's a shame because, as you said, they are good radios in
general.
