In my early 20's I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and prescribed
Propylthiouracil (PTU). Stayed on threatment for over a year but hated
the weight gain and mood swings. I dropped PTU and regained "normal"
readings on my thyroid. Several years later at age 37, I had
CHEMOTHERAPY for breast CA. Shortly after end of treament I began to
experience symptoms of MENOPAUSE. These symptoms continued and I
attributed them to chemo-induced menopause, rather than hyperthyroid
(many symptoms are similar) but at age 41, I decided to have my thyroid
checked due to persistent fluctuations in my heart rate. Although my
thyroid levels appeared within normal range, my TSH was well below
"normal" and I was once again diagnosed with a hyperthyroid. I was given
the choice of destroying my throid or prescribing to PTU (which is only
a temporary solution, doctors say). I opted for PTU (despite the links
to cancer & other risks). I became "hypo" and am still in the process of
adjusting my PTU dosage. I am battling weight gain and mood swings
again. I am looking for alternatives to treatment other than permanently
"deactivating" my thyroid. ANYONE out there with a similar story????
