I regularly use Easy cleaner from 
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm and a little less 
regularly use CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/.

As others have suggested, I'd recommend a solid backup strategy and 
making a restore point and backing up your registry just before updating 
your registry.
