I personally do not use Arctic Silver Paste! I know many people that do.
First of all, if you read the instructions that come with your retail box version of Processor it probably specifically states that using anything other than the pre-installed paste square, your warranty is VOID. It typically states this concerning the supplied heat sink as well.
The other reason is this, it is difficult to apply an even coat of ASP to the area without over or under applying it. I know plenty of people who just slap a big glob in a generally bigger than needed area and it's messy, as well as still difficult to determine if you have a complete and even contact surface between the processor and heat sink.
The supplied paste square is firm enough that you're not running the risk of squeezing all the compound from between the components and leaving too thin an application to function properly.

> Need to know how to apply artic silver. Bought it based on recomendation here. Was told to follow directions. No directions on box or on web site. Bought new AMD chip. Is it recommended to replace the heat transfer paste on fan base with artic silver? How many cpu's will 3.5 grams of artic silver cover?
