What about an EndAround.
I use FolderShare (foldershare.com).
As I understand it, you do not have to set up Microsoft Networking at all.
I share a folder with between PCs at home and even successfully tried it at work.
Files are replicated to both PCs.

There is also and option that is similar to offering a file share.  Where you can have access to remote files (offer a folder share) WITHOUT setting up microsoft networking.

Problems:
  About twice a year I have to reconnect to the share (takes 2 minutes).
  Deleted files are kept on the computer you deleted it from in a hidden file.
             (I found it and cleaned it up).

Just an idea, and it is free!

I would try more than one security test to be sure I was not getting 
biased results. Try www.grc.com as I have only heard positive comments 
on their tests and fixes for many years. Also, if you are using wireless 
connections, make sure you have the wireless portion of the LAN set up
