if you are looking at setting up an external HDD setup these days i would go down the line of an e-sata setup this has the efect of moving an  internal HDD (speed wise) - externaly  
all else i would stick with USB2 as just about all computers around today suport USB 1 or 2, not to many with firewire, you should only look a firewire if you have a camcorder with that conection..
