Commercial oats are used routinely by large food companies many of whom
have already shown they don't care about celiacs. Any oat products that I
may eat (oatmeal!!) after reading the NEJM article will come from a small
supplier that I can trust.
More later on "cross contamination" and cleaning of production lines when
gluten containing foods are also handled, I've replaced Quaker grits with
Arrowhead Mills corn grits, a much tastier product. I'm waiting for written
material from them and Pacific Grain and will then report on very
satisfying conversations with the president of Arrowhead and the celiac
aware person at Pacific. The president even had heard that breathing gluten
containing dust was bad for celiacs.
