Richard, I am using the HF9V antenna and am using random length radials of 
number 16 wire.
The lengths are from 12 foot to about 120 feet.
I have mine ground mounted and it works great!
I have worked Japan on 75 mtr ssb when the band was good a couple of years 
ago.
