Christy,
I use Power Poles here and really like the flexibility they offer.
Perhaps with only 1 radio and 1 power supply and the thought of a small
battery in the future, they may be overkill for you at this point. But no
real reason why you can't install them yourself if you want to go that
route.
The "real" tool is about 50 bucks to install them, but the cheaper one (the
one I use) is only ten bucks. Ten pairs of power poles (10 red, 10 black)
is ten dollars. Plus whatever wire you decide to use.
Besides a cutting/stripping tool and a crimper, you should also have
something to check continuity. This will also tell you if there is a short
before you apply power to your handiwork. Nobody likes to smell smoke.
Another option for using power poles is to buy pre-made wires with power
poles installed. Saratoaga sells some through Ham Radio Outlet, and maybe
other dealers. Others like West Mountain Radio may also sell them.
Below are a few items from the HRO online catalog. I know that you
have bare ends on your radio power cord, but there are ways around that .
Good luck, Steve KW3A
