no, you could use a quad loop, a delta loop, a horizontal yaggi, a dipole,
all kinds of things.
You could even get a smaller ground plain bass antenna and stick it in a
corner at an angle, or straight up inside a stair well, or tall ceilinged
room.
I had an antron99 antenna upright in a stair well of a 2 floor apartment i
was in and it worked like a charm for some dx...although, my neighbors did
complain about their toaster, fridge, tv, stereo, computer, baby monitors,
and vibrators making funny noises when i transmitted, but other then that it
worked great.
They complained that the bed springs began talking to them when i turned on
the 500 watt liniar as well...didn't do that too often.
Interestingly enough, we eventually got evicted from the duplex because i
flatly refused to take down my 20FT mast that was attached to the fence, and
which was supporting my dual band 2m/70CM antenna.
They said take all antennas down or be gone, so we went.
