ASTRON'S GAMBIAN ZIRCON JV READY TO GO - 03 February 2006
Zirconium chemicals producer Astron Limited has confirmed that its Gambian
mining joint venture (JV) with Carnegie Corporation has received a mining
license.
At present, Astron says that the dredge utilised for trial mining is planned
to recommence mining as soon as possible. In order to supplement the existing
dredge, two additional suction dredges and a bucket dredge are on site and
ready for assembly, the company added. Astron's mining team will return to The
Gambia in the next few weeks. In 2002, Astron formed a 50/50 JV with
Carnegie for the initial purpose of treating a zircon tailings resource in The
Gambia. Production is anticipated at up to 20,000 tonnes per annum of
zircon/rutile non-magnetic concentrate which will be exported to Astron's Chinese
operations.
