Pure alcohol has zero carbs, and therefore has no
glycemic response.  As a matter of fact if you were to
drink vodka, gin, rum, or even red wine, you'd the see
the exact opposite of a glycemic response.  Diabetics
quite often have severe hypoglycemic (low blood sugar)
reactions if they consume alcohol without food.  

As far as heart health, alcohol in moderation is
cardio protective, especially red wine, although I
absolutely agree with you that over consumption will
have the opposite effect.
