I phrased that poorly. What I meant was that some but
not all of the islet cells have been destroyed.

This appears to be what happened with my daughter's
fiance, who was diagnosed with Type 1 6 or 7 years a
ago and uses an insulin pump, adjusting the amount of
insulin to the carb content of what he eats. Recently
some tests discovered that he is still producing some
insulin, so apparently there are still some
insulin-producing cells working.
