Two things:

1) Are you sure you're plugging your earphone in the correct jack?
Kenwood, in their infinite wisdom, has the 1/8-inch jack for
microphone and the smaller one for earphone. If you plug an earphone
in the microphone jack, it just won't work.

As for setting the audio on both bands to the same freq, yes, this
will lower the audio, but I can't see any good reason to do this.
