Looking through the lids, it is impossible to tell what soda is in what
cup except for the clear ones like 7up sprite etc and than without
marking diet the taste test is the only next step.    Likewise for the
brown cola or root beer syrups as well.  

A soda by any other name is still salt water.....

Marking the lids basically serves the same purpose for blind people as 
sighted people. This is especially handy if the buttons on the lid are
all 
the same shape.
