Powering it off of the rig supply may or may not work.  I(t isn't at all 
the current involved, but ground loops.  I tried out a speech plus a 
friend of mine had once, and powering it off of my common 12 volt bus 
didn't work at all.  Had all kinds of rf feedback.  When I put it on a 
small wall wart, it worked fine.
