I have some Yaesu gear and for the most part I have no problems using it. I
have the FT-530 dual band HT which is very accessible. The trick I use to
program the CTCSS tone is to store a memory with a known tone, then copy
this memory to the vfo whenever you need a tone.
In the van I have the FT-900 mobile HF rig. This is a great rig but it
can be frustrating to program. I can't complain much though, I traded an
old laptop for the FT-900 and a Alinco DR-112 (or maybe it was a DR-110). I
have worked the world with the FT-900 and a Hamstick from the car.
My wife has the VX-2R HT and I can only program it with the computer, but
once it's programmed it's not difficult to find which memory bank you want.
In one bank I put several commercial FM stations and I use this bank as my
reference for finding the other banks. In the last memory of each bank I
put the local NOAH WX station and this allows me to find where the memory
wraps. I mostly use the VX-2R to crossband through the V7. It also works
great as a scanner.
A friend has two FT-7100's, both have been junk, with several trips to the
shop. The most recent one that just returned from the shop caught on fire
soon after being repaired.
I had a FT-5100 dual bander for one day, that's how long it took me to
realize I did not like this radio. I was lucky to be able to send it back
to HRO and get full credit towards the Kenwood TM-V7A.
