APRS stands for Automatic position reporting system.
It was developed not by amateurs, but has been embrassed by hams as a neat
way to give their mobile locations via radio.
the way it works is a GPS receiver is interfaced with a TNC which is then
interfaced with a transceiver.
Or in the case of some rigs, the TNC is built in.
The GPS sends its information such as time, date, location, approximate
speed, longitude and latitude readings and other user definable data to the
TNC which then converts it into packet bursts which is then sent out over a
particular frequency.
