There are two types of diabetes. Type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes is a limitation in the ability of the body to make insulin. Type 2, or insulin resistance, involves the inability of the body to properly deal with an overabundance of blood glucose. With type 2, the body sees too much insulin and doesn't respond to it properly. The skunk in a room analogy is a good one. When you first walk in, the stench is overwhelming. But after a while, you all but lose you ability to even smell it. The body reacts in the same way to an overabundance of insulin.

Ray had type 2 issues, I believe.
