One benefit (for oil companies) would be areas of currently frozen tundra,
known to have oil deposits, however there is likely to be methane release as
well (when tundra turns to bog). Russia almost didn't ratify Kyoto since
global warming may benefit their northern climes in this way.
Southern Greenland has been successfully growing potatoes commercially for the
last 6-7 years, previously they were all imported from Denmark.
The UK is kinda a small place, over the last 30 years a lot of new house
building has taken place in the flood plain of rivers (with an estimate of a
flood event once every 100 years), however insurers are waking up to the
likelihood these events will become much more common so these houses will
become uninsurable (for floods at least). So, if your contemplating "island
living" don't just look at coastal flooding, but look at river flood plains
as well. Always check source of fresh water for any property.
