While I can't answer Lou's question about computer chess programs, his post
reminded me of my first encounter with chess via the radio. Actually, it was
my first real encounter with the game itself.
It happened in the late 60s while I was still an SWL, listening to my local
state net on 3990. Just above that frequency was a group of chess players
who met almost nightly. I commented to my brother that theirs was about the
least interesting conversation I had ever heard on the air.
That's when he told me what they were doing.
There was a group that met on 17 meters in the early 90s, but I haven't
tuned across them in many years.
