doual'art invites cultural practitioners, researchers and the wider public to enter the artistic scene of Douala through a series of events that will animate the economic capital of Cameroon from the 9th to the 16th December 2007. Participants will approach the cityscape visiting the most experimental public art projects promoted by doual’art in the last 16 years and the most active art institutions throughout 12 neighbourhoods of Douala. Two conferences will put the spot-light on the methodologies and impact of urban interventions allowing experts and dwellers to exchange and evaluate the most effective solutions. The theoretical discussion will develop alongside the presentation of site-specific installations produced ad-hoc for SUD tackling issues such as urban mobility, heritage, the informal sector, recycling and modernity. SUD will function as a showcase for artists and institutions operating in Douala and as a working platform for experts of the sector.

On the occasion of the Salon Urbain de Douala, doual'art will present the publication Douala in Translation: a view of the city and its creative transforming potentials which was produced by doual'art in collaboration with iStrike foundation and published by Episode publishers. The text gathers cross-disciplinary analyses of Douala that encourage looking at Douala through its complexity and elusiveness, bypassing conventional theoretical approaches to the African metropolis. The urban context becomes a case study where artistic practices act as triggers of social change as they engage and affect the cityscape. For the first time, this text documents the history, approach and projects realised by doual'art since 1991. doual’art is a contemporary art and research centre created in 1991 in Cameroon by Marilyn Douala Bell and Didier Schaub. For the last 16 years, it has been fostering cultural projects and commissioned site-specific art interventions within Douala. doual'art works as an intermediary between artists, social and economic actors and local collectives.
iStrike Foundation designs, promotes and realises international cooperative projects, which produce visual representations of territories. In focusing on resources, it avoids activities based on problem solving. iStrike operates through its virtual community employing an open source based methodology.
