When I do use that stuff, I take the backing off and just mush it good 
around the connector and I never put tape on the outside of it I don't 
think, just once and I don't remember why I did that, I think some one told 
me it would be better and it didn't stick after a few weeks and I was left 
with just the sealer on the connector anyway but I might be wrong on that 
part, it might not have fallen off. If you're going to use a barrel 
connector, definitely use it inside and not out if a tall possible. 
Personally I'd say don't use one at all if there's any humanly possible way.
