Wade Seeks Release of MFDC Detainees in Banjul
Friday 21st September 2007
Maitre Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, is seeking
the release of MFDC militants believed to be arrested in The Gambia some
months ago.
According to the Senegalese Press Agency (APS), a delegation headed by
Serigne Diop, last Wednesday called on the Gambian leader, Dr Alhagie
Yahya Jammeh, at State House to deliver a special message from his
Senegalese counterpart.
In an interview with APS on their return in Dakar, Special Envoy Serigne
Diop said that they were well received by President Jammeh, who promised
to study Me.Wade's request with care.
Mr. Diop disclosed to APS that President Wade's seeking the release of
MFDC militants currently being detained in Banjul, is a clear
demonstration of his total commitment to restore peace in Casamance.
"He could have been happy with the arrest of the militants but on the
contrary he wants to see them free," Mr. Diop told Senegalese Press Agency.
According to the Agency some 20 MFDC militants including Abdoulaye
Diediou, Secretary-General of the Interior wing of MFDC, and Ismaila
Magne Dieme, Commander of the Front North of Diakaye are currently
detained in Banjul.
But it is learnt from informed sources that this request is conditional
on Senegalese government meeting certain conditions.
