Upper Saloum Vows to Desert Opposition
Wednesday 21st September 2005
By Lamin B Darboe, The Point
In what could be described as a preposterous development for the opposition, some electorate in the Upper Saloum constituency have expressed their burning desire to desert the opposition and to neutralise the constituency as an opposition strong-hold.
As campaigning for the September by-elections gathers pace, some electorate do not hide their feelings to reject any opposition National Assembly aspirant for the Upper Saloum seat.
Speaking at a mass rally, the chief of Upper Saloum, Malick Mbye, predicted a landslide victory for the APRC-sponsored candidate, Sainey Mbye, saying that the people of Upper Saloum are now poised for a change as Hamat Bah would not be returned to the Assembly. Mbye, he added, would sweep 95% of the votes.
Meanwhile, over 500 opposition sympathisers in Upper Saloum were reported to have switched allegiance to the APRC party. Prominent among them are the former NRP constituency Chairman, Alhagie Abdou Secka, former NRP constituency Campaign Manager and Bara Secka from Tentu village.
