Excellent comments, Todd; thanks.
There is no reason to avoid pork, lamb and poultry, all of which thrive on
pasture. For pork, you just sow some roots in with the pasture, and the
pigs plow the soil for the next planting, in the process of digging them
out. Pastured livestock is IMHO the ultimate in cruelty-free eating.
They live a natural life in the sunshine with their own kind, eating their
proper food. Then the butcher comes, and in a few minutes, they're gone.
The practice that needs to be discontinued on ethical grounds as well as
health is Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO): feedlots, pig
prisons, chickens in cages. This practice is absolutely bizarre, if you
stop to think about it.
The U.S. is the only country where the meat supply is almost completely
CAFO.
Cattle were never meant to eat concentrated foods like this, and stand
around on mountains of manure. That's why there is so much problem with E
coli:0157 and other pathogens. The fat from the CAFO meats is distorted
too: way down in Omega 3s, way up in saturated fats.
It is just not good for us to eat the flesh of animals treated this way.
I know it's "cheaper". What is your health worth, anyway?
