Howard,

For splitting tracks, with auto-cue, go to the edit menu and select edit cue
points. This gives a dialog box with either spacing or mark silence. You
may need to select the mark-silence tab with your mouse emulation command.
If your hiss level is high, you may need a higher threshhold such as -30DB
instead of the default which I think is -40DB. Minimum Length is
adjustable; if you have tracks with some silent spots in the middle, you may
need to make this length a bit longer. Next setting is minimum separation
in time between tracks. The next setting is one you may need to adjust,
since I think you mentioned that there was a bit of remaining sound from the
cue points you currently tried. This is the start time for the cue point:
choices are 0%, 25%, 50% 75% or 100% which determines where in the silence
the cue point is placed. Try at least 50%.

After you run the auto-cue, control-j moves from one cue point to the next
and control-shift-j moves backward. You can edit them if necessary. Once
you're satisfied, go back to the edit menu, enter on cue points, and select
split file. You can then select the directory; save it either in the same
format or as a .cda CD-Aligned file for burning to CD. You can use the cue
names, or use the base-file name/number combination where each track is
numbered sequentially.

Don't worry about what people think; they don't do it very often.
