I guess that is why they are called "mobile" radios and are designed with
the mobile user in mind.
Given todays compact and sub compact vehicles, its no wonder consumers are
demanding the ability to remote mount the control head and hide the bigger
portion of the radio away in the trunk or where ever.
Even the bigger S U V style vehicles don't often have accessible mounting
surfaces on the dash or close enough to the driver for a regular sized
mobile radio.
I am sure that is why the HF and VHF/UHF rigs that offer either a remote
head option or have a detached or detachable face plate are so popular.
Not everyone has a 1987 van or a 1988 dodge pickup with 16 square feet of
empty flat dash space or under dash space to mount radio equipment.
that said, it would be nice if they did give the consumer the choice to
remote mount or chassis mount the face plate without adding an extra $90 or
so for remote cables or some sort of funky attachment apparatus.
