Sheldon:
No question that the Zone is lower calorie, but that's pretty much given
to lose weight, and the current thinking is that lower calorie is better
for long-term health.
The strength of the Zone diet for me was being able to eat fewer
calories, but NOT feeling hungry, and actually feeling clearer headed
and less lethargic and dopey than I did eating far more before. It
balanced my blood sugar, made me less dependent on food, less dependent
on carbos, and gave me far more energy than I had since being diagnosed
with the thyroid disease.
Non Zone, I could eat tons of lower calorie veggies and stuff and be
hungry and miserable all the time and not lose weight, but somehow, the
addition of the ratio of protein and good fats made it satisfying to eat
less, and easier to lose weight? Magic? Probably not. But eating
frequent small balanced meals is a good way to ensure balanced blood
sugar, and that's probably the "magic" secret that allows one to eat
less but feel better.

P.S. Have you factored in your activity level for your zone blocks? The
zone calculators on the web will do it for you? You may not be giving
yourself enough credit for activity, as your blocks sound a bit low for
your size.
