In 1971, my mother noticed that my throat was swollen. I was a military
dependent at the time so all this went through Carswell AFB in Ft Worth,
TX. My mother went to the doctor with me and thank goodness because she
had never told me what she told my doctor. At the age of 3, my tonsils
were removed and as the throat was not healing, the area was radiated.
This alerted to the doctor and I was sent for tests at the radiation
center for thyroid scan. I was told that because of the radiation I had
a higher risk of thyroid cancer. Within a few weeks of the first
appointment, I was scheduled for surgery and nearly all of the right half
of the thyroid was removed. I was put on a thyroid substitute which after
all these years I don't remember the name or quantity. In 1981, I went
to the doctor because I was having difficulty swallowing and again the
outcome was surgery. The entire left lobe was removed and thyroid
substitute was still prescribed. The difficulty swallowing continues and
at the last real thorough testing, there are two nodules behind the tiny
piece of the right thyroid which still remains. Now I am noticing more
nodules around my neck which I have not been to the doctor yet about but
do have appointment. The point of all this is:
First, over the years there have been times when I did not take a thyroid
substitute and that tiny piece that is left produces what doctors say is
within the "normal" range.
Second, do any of you have experiences with removed thyroid.
Third, the doctor told me that this higher cancer risk expired by my age
30, which I passed 22 years ago.
TIA
