Try going to settings in the control panel and under sound video and game controlers there is a place to set up playback and recording devices.  I am using a set of head phones with a mike connected to them and the mike has to be really close to my mouth when I speak.  I have it working on a windows me machine but can't get it to work on my xp machine.
