Andy,
I've made them with RG 8 type, such as RG 213, and also with RG 8x, but
have never used RG 58 anywhere in my station. I suppose the choking
action would be the same, but loss is very high in that type of coax.
Whatever the loss is in the length of coax used is still there even though
it is now wrapped into a 6 inch coil.
Perhaps RG 58 would be good in a portable or back packing situation, or for
experimentation just to see if it works, but it wouldn't be my first
choice.
